On 15th July Andrew, David, Guy, Neil and Tim will be attempting to complete the UK’s number 1 ultra marathon. The Race to the Stones is a 100km off-road race starting near Stokenchurch along the 5,000 year old Ridgeway. The race ends at Avebury in Wiltshire. Avebury is one of Europe’s largest neolithic monument and a fitting end to this epic run (if you get there).
The team are scheduled to start at about 8am on the Saturday and have opted for the one day challenge. The 100km is mainly off-road, following the ancient ridgeway footpath. Its a very up and down route, with total climbing of over 4,000ft. Just look at the elevation graph below the map. The good news is the countryside around Beaconsfield provides ample hills to train on! The bad news is that based on training to date it looks like we’ll burn 10,000 calories if we finish!
We’re not doing the run purely for the fun of it, however. We’re also trying to raise as much as we can for the NPRF. The charity is dedicated to funding research into finding a treatment for NPC. Over the last 6 years the charity has funded over £600,000 of UK-based research into the disease and significant progress has been made. Amongst the many pills that William takes daily, one has directly resulted from NPRF funded research. Another research project assessed efficacy of various types of a particular compound and found the most popular type was actually harmful.
The charity has several principles it’s adopted; key amongst these are minimising overheads and only raising funds it can realistically commit to research in the near term. The charity is now seeking to raise money to fund help a number of research applications to continue its work.
It would be fantastic if you can sponsor the team, it will really help motivate the team face the many hills!
