Richard is the charity’s Patron. Richard was introduced to the charity by Ann O’Neill, one of the charity’s trustees and a former colleague from Capital Radio. Richard invited William and his mum Sue to Wimbledon to watch the tennis. William had a great day and in addition to meeting Richard, visited behind the scenes including the commentary box, he had his picture taken with Richard and Dermot O’Leary who happened to be also visiting!
Richard has stayed in contact with Ann and followed the progress made by the charity. During the Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride in 2011 Richard tweeted to his followers inviting them to support us with a text donation. We saw the power of social networks as our inbox filled with text donation notifications.
Richard appeared on celebrity episodes of All Star Family Fortunes and Million Pound Chatty Man Drop and chose the NPRF as his designated charity, raising both money and awareness of the disease. Richard also hosted the charity’s first ball in 2012, adding some celebrity stardust to the event.
In accepting the invitation to be the charity’s Patron, Richard said;
"I am delighted and honoured to have been invited to become patron of the Niemann-Pick Research Foundation. It is very moving to see how hard the supporters of this charity fundraise to build awareness and also strive to develop research trials in the UK and I really hope I can help out".
